About Us
At Westview Christian Church, we want to help others find the joy and peace we have found in our Lord Jesus Christ.
What We Believe
We believe the only way to find joy and peace with Jesus Christ is to stand on scriptural truth and uphold it in our teaching and services. We desire unity. In an effort to have unity among Christians, we believe that the church should be united on essential doctrines where the Bible has spoken clearly, and we believe that we should allow liberty where the Bible has not clearly spoken. Below is an effort on our part to share a statement of our beliefs.
Statements of Faith
Jesus
We believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. We believe that Jesus was both fully God and fully man. We believe that Jesus was born of a virgin, and came into our world to save sinners.
Bible
We believe the Bible is the inspired, written word of God. It is absolute in its authority, believe in its revelation, final in its content, and without error in its teaching. The Bible is “living and active” and speaks to our present circumstances.
Salvation
We believe that all people are guilty of sin and can receive the forgiveness of sin only through God’s free gift of grace and obedience to Him. Salvation comes to those who trust Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and appeal to God for this free gift in the way He has commanded.
We believe that the Bible teaches a clear pattern of action for those who desire God’s free gift of grace through His Son, Jesus. Those who desire salvation are to believe that Jesus is the Son of God and the Savior of the world, they are to repent of their personal sin, confess Jesus as their Lord, and they are to be baptized by immersion for the forgiveness of sin and the gift of the Holy Spirit as taught in scripture.
Westview's History
With the desire to form a non-denominational, Restoration Movement Christian church in Spartanburg, SC, a group began the planning and preparation which led to the first worship service on February 13, 1977 at the Arts Center. The new congregation moved to the BiLo Plaza in the Westview area in January, 1978. In October, 1979, the congregation began meeting in the Country Corners Shopping Center on Westview Boulevard.
The congregation purchased 4.3 acres of land on Old Reidville Road and began the planning for worship facilities on that property. A modular house was purchased, placed on the property and re-modeled to a place of worship and Christian education. The congregation moved to it’s new home in December, 1979.
In September, 1983, a bond program was instituted and the construction of a worship sanctuary began in December of that year. Dedication of this building was held on May 20, 1984.
The congregation continued to grow, and in 2001 decided to have an addition to the facilities built. Ground breaking for an addition to house a new fellowship hall, classrooms, office and library space was on January 13, 2002. Upon the completion of this facility, with some sadness, the modular house that had served the congregation since 1979 was retired and removed from the property.
Westview Christian Church has a rich heritage and an important role in the life of Spartanburg. Standing firm to the ideal of restoring simple New Testament Christianity to its pristine purity, it is reaching out to the community in a variety of ways with the gospel of Christ. Standing firm on the Word of God, we have a positive view of eternity and are determined to be God’s instrument in the present world. All of this is possible because of the continuing dedication and hard work of its founders over forty years ago and all who have followed.
To God be the glory, great things He has done!
